“I’m a Winner” delves into the chaotic world of postpartum life through a blend of heartfelt realism and quirky humor.

We open on Joy, a disheveled mom in her car in a parking lot on a hot, sticky afternoon. From outside the car we hear the blood curdling screams of a newborn. As Joy ventures into the grocery store, the fluorescent lights and aisles filled with endless choices amplify her disoriented state. She is met with obstacles, like better moms and skinny girls in tiny gym clothes.

After finding formula, Joy comes face-to-face with Maureen, the grocery store’s friendliest clerk. Maureen’s slow pace coupled with a scanner malfunction becomes the tipping point. As the beeping of the scanner intensifies, Joy spirals into a hormonal fever-dream. Handheld camera movements mirror Joy’s frenetic energy, capturing her rage, despair, and bodily fluids. The grocery store transforms into a stage for her breakdown, with customers looking on in bewilderment.

Once settled back into her car, Joy is interrupted by Maureen at her driver-side window. Maureen passes her a sticker that says “I’m a Winner”. She flips the sticker and Maureen has written “You are doing a good job”, in which Joy finds unexpected solace.

“I’m a Winner” is a poignant exploration of the challenges and beauty of motherhood infused with wit and empathy. It’s a film that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit amidst life’s shit storms - it’ll make you laugh and make you cry, all in under 12 minutes.
